Some quick portraits of the just-too-elegant Sasha and Johnny Velour I drew in the front row at the Ignatz Award ceremonies this weekend at spx! Sasha Velour ( sahsashas ) was a shimmering undersea dream in teal paired with a long blonde Donatella wig, and Johnny Velour ( vymmagazine ) was her perfect accessory, topped with a mint tulle bow. Despite her obvious shyness, Sasha graciously accepted her “unexpected” hostess duties from James Sturm and awarded bricks with aplomb. <3

Representing VYM magazine’s Preview Issue, which you can order online right now.

Who sold the “all feelings are valid” print at spx? I recall two friendly women at the table, but I don’t remember their company’s name and I can’t find any mention of the print online. Anyone know?

Me! That was me, Laurel Lynn Leake, and that print was one of a three part Headspace series I made for maplekeycomics. I’m so glad it spoke to you! You can buy it on my Counterinutitive Comics Store, alone or discounted with its two buddies. C:

spx was utterly joyful this year! So much thanks to everyone who stopped by my table to pick up comics and prints, and for all the conversations I got to share this weekend on mental illness, queerness, and making comics. A huge congratulations to all the Ignatz winners and nominees too, including my friends redinkradio, andsoluke, and cathyboy! I feel so, so lucky to be a part of this community and be able to table and attend with all my buddies this year. <3 View Larger

It’s gonna be a Laurelpalooza this weekend at table L7 at spx! Come visit me and angstuniversity and get some free bits and bobs as well as our latest minicomics and posters. I’ll look kinda like this!

Stick around the table neighborhood for our fellow cartoonstudies alumni heartsandminis, lickspittlecomics, and thulsadude with the new issue of Maple Key Comics (maplekeycomics)! sahsashas and aprilmalig will be next door as well, along with the debut issue of Vym Magazine (vymmagazine), and you can also find Ignatz nominee andsoluke, pigeonbits, thesnowybiscuit, lauraanneterry, and the official CCS table down the SPX street. Dang, right on!!

Greetings and Adulation from the House of Velour!
We (Johnny and Sasha Velour) will be debuting our first joint publication at SPX, Vym. Vym, is an art magazine about drag! In Vym, we want to present drag as both a stylized art form and a political action. It is an act rich in both theatre and theory, tied to legacies of sequins and masks, but engaged with issues of gender, race, and class. Drag is something that everyone recognizes, but not everyone knows. We hope to change that.
Our preview issue is 36 color pages full of essays and art (comics, photography, and collage) and will be found with us at table L6! It features works by both LGBTQ and Allied artists: Jon Chad, Laurel Lynn Leake, Eric Kostiuk WIlliams, and John Lisle to name a few!
About Us:
Artistic Director: Sasha Velour (Sasha Steinberg) is a comics artist and drag queen. Sasha is particularly interested in developing queer literary comics, and is currently working on an epic graphic novel about the Stonewall uprising of 1969 which he is releasing serialy. His works can be found in QU33R, Comics Workbook Magazine, Suspect Device (#3 & #4), and Maple Key Comics.
Editorial Director: Johnny Velour (John Jacob Lee) is a stage performer who spent the majority of his twenties dancing across the country in a pair of gold high heels. He received warm notices for his portrayal of George in the stage version of The Wedding Singer (a role created for the screen by Alexis Arquette). He also acts as choreography consultant, personal milliner, and boyfriend to Sasha Velour. This is Johnny’s first and Sasha’s third time exhibiting at SPX.
Pop by (L6) and give us a kiss, Darlings!

We are so proud to be part of the queer presence at SPX this year! Thanks
